Does your car insurance really protect your family?
Does your car or truck insurance really protect you and your family? Maybe/Maybe not. That depends on what coverages you have.
When we think of motor vehicle insurance we typically think about insurance that protects US if we hurt someone else and we are at fault. We call that “liability coverage”. But what if it’s the other way around? What if they hurt you or someone in your car and the other driver is at fault? Are you or your passenger protected? Well, this is where “it depends”.
People who have motor vehicles are required by law to have at least $15,000 of liability coverage, but what if they didn’t or what if your damages are in excess of whatever liability coverage the other driver has? Are you and are your passengers protected? It depends. They could be IF you had purchased UNinsured and UNDERinsured motorist coverage.
Uninsured motorist coverage protects you if the person who injures you did not have insurance (and we know that certain drivers don’t, especially in today’s economy). Underinsured motorist coverage can protect you if the driver who injures you did not have enough liability coverage to fully compensate you. I often describe these two coverages as the 2 most important coverages you can have.
